Chapter Ten

“Your estate is lovely,” Heather said as she took in the hilly terrain that surrounded the manor which had vines winding up the edges in an attractive design Gill’s mother had instructed the gardener to use.

Gill didn’t realize he had taken the view for granted. London had been where the excitement was. It was there that things happened. Cervanton had always been an afterthought. They had few visitors here. For the most part, this place was in its own world. It was so far removed from anywhere else. Growing up, the thought of being here had bored him. Now, it excited him. He had Heather all to himself. No one would interrupt them out here.

“The staff does a good job of tending to the place,” he said.

“Yes, I can see that,” she replied. She turned to him and took his hand. “This is going to be an adventure. We’re going to have so much fun together.”

Up to now, he’d done a good job of showing restraint around her, but he wasn’t inclined to resist temptation this time. Following his instincts, he lowered his head to hers and kissed her.

When the kiss ended, he was rewarded with the widest smile he’d ever seen on her face. She’d definitely enjoyed the fact that he’d made the first move and kissed her. He’d given her an obvious display of his affection, and she’d welcomed it. He’d given her a hint that he hadn’t minded being kidnapped, and she was still interested in him.

Overcome by the assurance, he took Heather’s hand and brought it to his mouth so he could kiss it. “You’ve made me the happiest gentleman in all of London and beyond,” he whispered.

Those were the words he had been inclined to tell her when he thought she was going to accept his proposal. But when she’d told him she had to think about it, the joy he’d felt at being in her presence had deflated to the point where he didn’t think he’d be able to say such words again. Now, however, he was once more swept up in the bliss of being with her, and because of that, he couldn’t stop himself from uttering the words. Indeed, they seemed to have come out of his mouth of their own accord.

To his pleasure, she put her free hand over his and said, “I want nothing more than for you to be happy. You’re everything to me, Gill.”

Her response was better than he could ever have imagined. He lowered his head back to hers and gave her another kiss, this time not ending it until the carriage came to a stop.

“Welcome to your estate, Lady Powell,” he said.

Unable to stop himself, he hurried to give her another kiss before the coachman opened the door. Then he took a moment to see if the staff had assembled outside to greet them. Sure, enough, the six members under his employment had all gathered at the entrance of the manor.

Gill left the carriage with Heather and walked over to them.
